Hello, community (of the Ring)! We’re back with an update following the release of the new The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set.
First of all, some clarification is needed regarding the release of a new card: Nazgûl.
Since the card is an uncommon and can be played in up to 9 copies in a deck, it is our duty to explain how this will work in our favorite format. A similar situation had already occurred with the card Relentless Rats when it was still an uncommon. At the time, the committee decided to consider it a common (see the announcement from June 26, 2006). We will not be keeping this system.
From now on, cards stating that they can be played in more than four copies may always be played as written (as in all Magic formats), even if this means exceeding the limit of 5 uncommons in a deck. However, you will not be allowed to play any additional uncommons. An example is always helpful, so let's look at the different possibilities with Nazgûl:
I have 1 Nazgûl in my deck: I can play 4 other uncommons;
I have 2 Nazgûl in my deck: I can play 3 other uncommons;
I have 3 Nazgûl in my deck: I can play 2 other uncommons;
I have 4 Nazgûl in my deck: I can play 1 other uncommon;
I have 5 to 9 Nazgûl in my deck: I can play 0 other uncommons.
We hope this will inspire you to come up with some exciting deck ideas using this new possibility!
Secondly, we wanted to update you on the current metagame. We have done extensive testing of Kuldotha Burn against a wide range of decks. The deck is strong, but it does not appear to be problematic, as a significant number of decks can consistently beat it pre-sideboard, while most sideboards can help even out or even turn the matchup around post-sideboard.
We believe the metagame will gradually consolidate around the strongest decks. We will continue to keep a close eye on this deck, as well as the other Tier 1 decks, in case the metagame becomes too oppressive.
To help you form your own opinion, we are making the pre-sideboard matchup table from our testing available to you:
Finally, we would also like to let you know that you can expect to hear from us more regularly than before. Our next announcement will be made no later than shortly after Gro'Pez #2, where we hope to see as many of you as possible. You can find all the information here.
Thank you for your attention.
